Most of the people experience low back pain sometime in their life time.
Usually the problem occurs after cold for most of the adults under age
45. The lumbar or lower spine connects the upper body and the lower body
and has a complex structure. It gives strength and mobility. One is able
to turn, twist and bend due to the mobile movement of the spine and able
to stand lift and walk due to the strength of this lumbar spine. Lower
back functioning is important for day to day life and if lower back pain
persists it prevents everybody from doing their normal routine work.
The muscles of the low back helps to stand, walk and lift while the ligament
of low back interconnected to the vertebral bones supports and stabilize
the low back. When a ligament which is stiff due to poor conditioning
or over use is injured, due to forceful movement, a sprain of low back
occurs. The main causes of low back pain are strain and sprain and other
reasons are obesity, improper use, smoking and poor conditioning.
Osteoporosis or decreased amount of bone, decrease in elasticity and strength
of ligaments is a natural effect of aging of the body. It can be reduced
by being careful while lifting things, taking proper diet and avoiding
smoking.
The bones lose strength especially in post menopausal women and the lumbar
vertebrae gets fractured even form a fall or sometime while lifting heavy
articles.
The disk is composed of a soft jelly like center or nucleus surrounded
by annulus which is tough. The nucleus begins to resemble the annulus
due to aging and sometimes during middle age cracks or fissures occur
in the disk which causes low back pain. Sometimes the material from the
disk may rupture or push out if the crack becomes big, then the disk is
said to be herniated or slipped. When the protruded disk touches a nerve
it produces pain in the leg.
An Orthopedic surgeon can be consulted and activity modification can be
made as prescribed by the doctor. Sometimes bed rest may be recommended
otherwise normal activities can be carried out with some modifications.
Once the initial pain has gone, then exercise to strengthen low back and
abdominal muscles can be done to increase flexibility. Reducing weight
and stop smoking also help to decrease recurrence. The best way to avoid
is to take care of postural and lifting activities. Only in case of slipped
disk surgery is needed.
Low back pain can be avoided by doing exercise, taking care while lifting,
maintaining body weight and stand and sit is proper posture.
