Back Strain Treatment

It is not necessary to have long bed rest with a back strain for this is a misconception. It is always better to be active if there is no serious complication like weakness, loss of weight, bladder or bowel control loss, or fever. Few tips would help in handling back pain and at the same time be active.

For the symptoms and the inflammation to get reduced stopping of normal physical activity is recommended which helps in calming things down.

Heat and ice application to the area of pain is recommended. For the first 48 to 72 hrs ice can be used and later a heat treatment which gives a better relief.
Pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be used for immediate relief from pain and inflammation.

During sleep fetal or curled-up position is recommended with a pillow between the legs. If one is used to sleeping on the back pillow or a rolled towel can be placed below the knee to reduce pressure. Twisting or heavy lifting is not recommended for the first six weeks which would give pressure to the back.

Exercise could be stopped for about two to three weeks after the injury. On consultation with a physical therapist exercise can be slowly started and within few days of this slow exercise one could switch over to normal regular activities.
